Introducing the house-husband!

Tagged:
You've all heard of housewives, but have you ever heard of a house-husband?
You see, today was Neil's last day of work at UBC. He now enters a period of limbo. Oh, he's been applying for new jobs and we're confident he'll have a new job lined up soon... but for the time being Neil has nothing to do but wait for one of the many jobs he's applied to, to take the bait and hire him and his superhuman brain. In the meantime, we're both excited for entirely different reasons.
Neil's definition of being a house-husband looks something like this:
On the other hand, I envision something more like this:
I think I win, he looks way happier holding the freshly folded laundry than he does pounding back a beer.
We'll keep everyone posted about what happens -- we are possibly looking at a move.... He's applied to universities and labs in Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Victoria, Vancouver (conflicted: I love it here, but the cost of living SUCKS -- but will it change??? Ottawa and Toronto are equally bad), Illinois, Indiana, California, and many others... I think we're leaning towards staying put if possible -- but we gotta go to where the jobs are... Unfortunately, a lot of the postings he's applied to don't start until July --so you may not hear anything for a month or so... in the meantime, I think I'll just bring in the bucks and then come home to our soon to be always immaculate pad! (I can dream!)

Suffering the hockey blues

Yesterday was a pretty big day in Torino for Canadians. Lots of good and if you're a hockey fan, one big DOH! At least that's how the front page of the Vancouver Province called it. I thought that this was a pretty amusing headline.

Anyone watching Canada play hockey yesterday would have to admit -- we didn't deserve to win. Where was the heart???

At World Juniors -- those guys placed with heart.

This Olympic team was flat. I can live with them not winning a medal -- but it would have been an easier pill to swallow had they had gone down playing great hockey. That just wasn't the case. Would our young talent have helped -- perhaps -- Phaneuf, Crosby and Spezza would have maybe brought some youthful enthusiasm -- but leadership and experience is important -- it shouldn't be discounted. That said, they could have gained experience this time around... so who knows... I just know that you can blame whoever you like, but you should blame the players. Coaches always take the heat -- but they aren't in control of what happens out there on the ice... and boys... you stunk. Bad.

just my two cents..

and can I just say, yikes -- 2 canucks with injuries... ohlund and salo..

There is no place like home -- sometimes

See this face.

This is the face of my super cute nephew whom I never get to see. He's growing up and I'm missing it. That makes me sad.
I guess I feel spoiled and a bit blessed. I grew up surrounded by my aunts, uncles and an army of cousins. Something I clearly took for granted. Living two provinces away from the majority of my family has made me realize that there is a certain comfort that can be taken away from having them nearby. When I think about having children of my own, it's always with a bit of regret that distance will make it harder for them to build relationships with their grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
I sometimes think this is valid and then I also sometimes think this is crazy. I have a great relationship with my relatives in Ontario -- who I only saw once a year.. and there were many years with no visits. I guess, in the end, if you want to make those connections, it rests within your power to make the most of visits and to keep in touch.
That is why I'm heading home during spring break. To see those big blue eyes... and get my chance to corrupt his young mind. I need to incorporate myself... selfish, I know. I miss this kid and though he's a sweetie on the phone (we talk),it doesn't beat throwing him up in the air, getting him hyper beyond reason and teaching him to burp.
I suppose seeing everyone else will be nice too.... kind of..... a little.... well at least for the first few days.... hehehe!
