To be or not to be? That is the question.

I actually really enjoy subbing. It is never the same, always interesting and you get to see a whole slew of different teaching styles. That said, I have been hunting for a permanent teaching gig for a while now. Well, a potential opportunity has come my way and I'm excited. Then again, if it comes through, I will have my own classroom and I'd be lying if I didn't admit to being a touch terrified at the same time.

May is the time when the school boards start hiring for the next year. I applied to a pile of jobs and two weeks ago I got my first bite. I had a chat over the phone with a principal about a 1.0 Grade 8 gig from Sept-June next year. Turns out that this school has 2 positions. The first is a mainstream gr.8 class that will have management challenges. The second is .5 Grade 8 gifted and .5 intermediate special education. I think I'm being considered for both. I was told that for either job I'd have to take an AQ class in Special Education. As it always is in this silly game we call life, this opportunity comes at a price ~ albeit a small one given that I'd actually have a consistent paycheck... our summer Europe trip would be temporarily and indefinitely shelved as I'd have to take this course over the summer.

Of course nothing is a given, at this point I just have an interview on Monday. It sounds crazy but I have a good feeling about it all... I am going to be positive. Subbing has been consistent since I started so if that's where I'm at come fall, so be it. I just wanted the chance for you all to either see me succeed in a blaze of glory or be denied! Again! Why have a blog if not to highlight personal misfortune... I should know soon. Wish me luck!

May Long and the case of the Fireworks Freaks

Tagged:

Our May Long Weekend was pretty quiet and I would not have asked for it to be any other way. Neil and I had a nice brunch on Saturday at Cora's, then spent the rest of the day with my dad and brother who were heading back to Regina that evening. On Sunday, we relaxed and both read a book as the power was out here for a few hours. It was kind of funny as this power outage resulted in people being stuck in the elevators in our building. Sure enough, the fire department showed up with three trucks to get them out. Our suite is right beside the elevators and we could hear the alarm being sounded that people were stuck. Thank God it wasn't me -- I'm as far from an optimist as they come and I'd have been sitting there fretting over numerous "untimely death" scenarios...

Monday was more of the same: lounging around the house, doing some light cleaning and staying in my pj's all day. It was wonderful.

Sunday and Monday night we got to take in the light show from our balcony... this is a really lame video (hard to see the fire crackers -- but really, you could see them really well from our balcony) but you get the idea... people everywhere were setting off firecrackers. It was quite noisy but it was sort of neat.

Neil and I thought it was sort of strange that there is no city bylaw stating that you need to be in an open area to set of firecrackers. You'd think it would be a fire hazard... Sure enough, the hooligans and in general, stupid public, were out in fine form as you can watch here on the CityNews website. Apparently, there were many incidents of people firing firecrackers at other people. On the news tonight, there was even a fire caused by a kid setting off a firecracker in their bedroom. Where are people's brains these days???

I have seen every single episode of Gilmore Girls.

I own seasons 1-6 and will buy season 7.

So when I watched last night's series finale, I did what any self-respecting fan of the show would do and proceeded to cry through the entire episode.

RIP Gilmore Girls.

Fun times in the Nation's Capital

This past weekend, I ventured out to Ottawa with some family. The Tulip Festival was in full bloom and I was looking forward to my second visit to this beautiful city. Neil and I first traveled to Ottawa about 10 years ago and our first impression was that it was one of the nicest and cleanest places we have visited in Canada. This second time around did nothing to sully our first impressions.

We only had 2 days so we didn't stray far from Parliament Hill but that was perfectly fine. The area surrounding the parliament buildings is beautiful and has lots for the eye to take in.
