In one week...

Tagged:

In exactly one week at this time (assuming my flight leaves as scheduled...) I'll be in the air en route to Rome. We are going for 12 days and hope to see:

Last, we fly home out of Geneva! It will be crazy, fun and exhausting and I CANNOT wait!!!

This is the second time I have moved my blog. The first was from Microsoft Live Spaces to Blogger. Then, I secretly moved to WordPress but never really notified anyone of the jump as I was trying to get better at writing code (something I've totally failed at). Now, here I am, at MaciagOnline.net

For the most part, I had no major problems at Blogger. Minor irritations: hated formating pictures in my blogs (the preview never matched reality) and I hated being limited to the very static and boring templates provided. I had been fine before they upgraded to new Blogger... but not knowing how to write CSS posed a major problem and any forays into trying to learn it just had me screaming.

I'm not sure that using drupal will be any different. I've already encountered a few problems and I'm far from proficient at this. My brother is irritated beyond belief with my cries and calls for help. I believe the term "dumb-ass" was thrown my way....

The reason I moved was to have to freedom to make whatever kind of changes I wanted with no restrictions. That said, not knowing more than the very basics will mean this is a work in progress (read: may never look much different due to my laziness/dumb-assness).

So take a look around. Some things work. Some things don't. I'm getting to it!!

Toronto Winter Festival presents: The Weakerthans!

Tagged:

Last night we ventured out to our second Toronto Winter Festival. Last year, we went to see the New Pornographers on a balmy evening (it was -26C) and it was absolutely fantastic! This year we headed down to Nathan Philip's Square to catch Winnipeg's, The Weakerthans. It was much warmer than last year, only -4C -- still my fingers were pretty numb by the end of the show. That was ok because there were all of these cool light/fire displays that you could huddle around to get warmed up again. They were extremely neat to behold. Have a look:

It was such a nice night that there were lots of people out skating!

But back to The Weakerthans! I was pretty excited as I really enjoyed their latest release, Reunion Tour, and have also enjoyed past albums (particularly Reconstruction Site which is FANTASTIC!). Musically, they sounded pretty solid. That said, I thought the show was only ok. They played a pretty mellow set and near the end my numb fingers were my main focus. That is in sharp contrast to last year's show by the NP's when even in -26C degree temps I was bopping around right until the bitter end! N agreed that the entertainment value was much better last year.

Here's a picture and a video clip. Enjoy!

The joys of winter in Ontario

Tagged:

Today I'm home because it's a PD day and us supply teachers don't get paid for PD days. I was very glad to stay home as I didn't really want to venture out as 10 cm of snow in TO is my version of driving in hell. Though people here see snow every year, they still panic and freak out when it arrives in large doses. I have a 40 minutes commute on a normal day. This turns into an 1.5-2 hour commute when we have snow.

Environment Canada had issued a blizzard/heavy snow fall warning for Southern Ontario to begin just passed midnight this Feb. 1st. So we were aware snow was heading this way. Driving home last night, the radio was announcing a variety of businesses and colleges that were pre-emptively closing on Friday due to the storm that was forecast but hadn't yet arrived. Seriously -- I laughed, pre-emptive closures before the snow arrived??? I'm sorry, but forecasts have been known to be wrong!

Anyhow, I, being a great wife, got up this morning and cooked N a yummy breakfast and brewed a large pot of coffee. He was just about to leave for work and at the last minute decided to check his email. Good thing he did, as he had this message:

Re: University Closure
Please be advised that due to severe weather conditions University buildings on the St. George campus will be closed at 11:00 a.m. today. Classes and on-campus activities are cancelled, with the exception of essential services.

Looks like we both have a snow day!
