home handiness

You're full term, baby.

This week's video:

Well, I am now into week 37 of this pregnancy.  A lot has happened since my last baby post so here goes....

N and I finished our pre-natal parenting classes.  I actually enjoyed them.  The hospital tour was traumatic... hospital is old thus facilities are not like what we witnessed in the labour videos we had previously seen.  We saw a woman arrive clearly in active labour (and what appeared to be tremendous pain). It did not ease my fears.  All in all though, I think I am as ready for labour as you can be, which is to say, not really ready at all. At our last class, every couple was given a doll.  We were taught how to hold our babies and then directed through a breast feeding tutorial.  N was really sweet - he held our fake baby properly the entire three hours!  I tried to snap a picture but he refused to cooperate - but take my word for it, it was a cute scene.  Last, to round out this journey, our instructor is planning to get all us first-time parents back together in August for a "baby reunion" and that may be interesting.  Not sure if we'll be around as we are planning to be at N's sister's wedding in Regina at the end of August but we'll see what happens.

Weekend to-do lists are starting to thin.  We have everything we need, I think.  This weekend's list seems lighter than the past few... install car seat, set up baby monitor, a few items left to throw into storage, etc.  Manageable. Last weekend we installed some shelves near our baby's "change station" and well -- N and I are not handy at all but I think they look pretty good.

36 weeks

My doctor's appointments have been ok.  I don't need to see my BP specialist again until a week after I deliver.  She's happy my blood pressure hasn't skyrocketed the last few weeks.

I am not going for a 4th ultrasound until after I deliver -- they think I may have a cyst on one of my ovaries (something registered on my last ultrasound) but I have been told not to worry about it as this kind of thing is common and almost always resolves itself.  Still, I do need to follow-up with more appointments after I deliver to be certain.  I was told that baby is head down (good) and borderline big (not sure if that is good or bad??).  I'm going to say it is good.  I've gained 14 pounds so far and so that just means the added weight is mostly baby.  Maybe I'll come out of this lighter... I can live with that!

We have a potentially interesting/disturbing situation to contend with the week I am due.  The G20 summit is in Toronto that week and the downtown is going to be shut down.  I mean a HUGE area of the downtown will actually be fenced off and inaccessible to the public.  What worries me most, is that they have announced that the "official protest area" is to be at Queen's Park (the Ontario Legislature) and this is one block from the hospital I will be trying to get to.  They keep talking about how the last G20, held in Pittsburgh, was marred by three days of angry protests, clashes with police and tear gas.  In fact, the concern is so great, that the U of Toronto -- 2 blocks in the other direction from Queen's Park is closing down campus during the summit and relocating all students that live on campus for the duration of the week. This means that N will be working from home those days, which is nice for me, but does nothing to relieve concerns that we will have one hellish trek to the hospital.  Parking is bad enough in the area when there are no angry, insane, protesters marching down city streets disrupting the peace. We could take transit but they are warning of major disruptions on all forms of transportation in and out of this area.  So... all I can say is that should this baby arrive on time, we will have one hell of a story to tell about how exactly we got to the hospital and what we witnessed en route.

Hmm.. that may be it.  Until next week!

N said to add that this is what we hope to encounter en route to the hospital!

Painting furniture 101

Tagged:

Guess what, I took this entire week and turned my living room into a workshop.

Neil has been so impressed with my handy work that he has allowed me to continue my painting spree and paint our bedroom furniture.

Here is the end result of this week:
2 bookshelves, 1 stereo stand, 1 magazine rack, 1 printer cart

Which brings me to next week. How to turn this ugly dresser into something new again (forgive the rushed and pretty crappy photo-shopped after photo)

I'll keep you posted on how the dresser works out.

I can do this, can't I?

Handy-woman K here and I'm about to try my luck at a few around the home projects. Problem is, my family (mostly my dad) has been laughing his ass off at my ideas.

  1. I am going to repaint our old stereo stand so that it matches all of our newer and darker living room furniture. I have bought the paint and materials and will be starting today. If it goes well, I may even do our bedroom dressers.
  2. I am going to build a padded/upholstered headboard for our bed. They are bloody expensive to buy and they would appear to be very easy to build. Problem is, how to make legs. All of the instructions I can find on the web are for mounting it to the wall. We aren't 100% we can mount it to the wall because we think we have concrete walls and we don't know if we have the tools necessary to make this possible.
  3. I want to take our current dresser mirror to a glass cutter so that it is a rectangle instead of the weird old fashion curvy thing it is now and then re-frame the now rectangle, clean-lined mirror. This project, I'll admit, is the one that seems the most difficult. I can get the glass cut but I don't know how to frame it. I suppose I could get the glass cut to fit in one of those cheap big Ikea frames... Maybe I need to think this one out... I want to keep everything relatively cheap as otherwise why not just buy new.... I just really want to see if these home decorating shows are right and that you can do amazing things with what you already have if you are a bit handy, creative and savvy.
  4. Paint Neil's old and ugly metal desk.

I think all of these things will look soooooo much better if and when I get to them. But up first, the stereo stand -- this project will determine whether I am handy or not.

Here is the before picture... it is being painted dark brown to match the rest of our living room furniture.

Introducing the house-husband!

You've all heard of housewives, but have you ever heard of a house-husband?
You see, today was Neil's last day of work at UBC. He now enters a period of limbo. Oh, he's been applying for new jobs and we're confident he'll have a new job lined up soon... but for the time being Neil has nothing to do but wait for one of the many jobs he's applied to, to take the bait and hire him and his superhuman brain. In the meantime, we're both excited for entirely different reasons.
Neil's definition of being a house-husband looks something like this:
On the other hand, I envision something more like this:
I think I win, he looks way happier holding the freshly folded laundry than he does pounding back a beer.
We'll keep everyone posted about what happens -- we are possibly looking at a move.... He's applied to universities and labs in Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Victoria, Vancouver (conflicted: I love it here, but the cost of living SUCKS -- but will it change??? Ottawa and Toronto are equally bad), Illinois, Indiana, California, and many others... I think we're leaning towards staying put if possible -- but we gotta go to where the jobs are... Unfortunately, a lot of the postings he's applied to don't start until July --so you may not hear anything for a month or so... in the meantime, I think I'll just bring in the bucks and then come home to our soon to be always immaculate pad! (I can dream!)
