Food for thought...

My husband is a pretty funny guy. As I search for full time work, he sends me "homework." This "homework" is usually articles and/or websites to check out to bide my time. I say he's a funny guy because he sends them to me while he's at work. Hmmm... maybe I should rethink grad studies and become a Post Doc myself...

A while back, he sent me an article from The Economist entitled, The Uncomfortable Politics of Identity . It was a very intriguing read. It made me think about and assess my own feelings and attitudes about citizenship.

I was struck by the quote of Salman Rushdie's in the article mentioned above:

“No society, no matter how tolerant, can expect to thrive if its citizens don't prize what their citizenship means.”

I must admit that the topic of maintaining "[the] balance between tolerance of cultural diversity and the need for minority communities to integrate with wider society," is an interesting one. Definitely something to stew on -- for a very delicate and precarious balance it is.
